How do you plan a trip to Lakshadweep? Start with three things that cannot be skipped: a valid entry permit for every island on your itinerary, confirmed accommodation on those islands, and a realistic transport plan from Kochi — by ship, flight to Agatti, or the scheduled seaplane timetable (18 September to 14 October 2026, daily except Tuesdays). Lakshadweep is not a walk-in destination. The administration controls visitor numbers, island access and stay arrangements. Get the paperwork and logistics right first, then choose islands and activities. Understanding Lakshadweep Before You Book

Lakshadweep is a union territory of India — a chain of coral atolls and islands in the Arabian Sea, roughly 200 to 400 kilometres west of the Kerala coast. Only a handful of islands are open to tourism. The rest are inhabited by local communities or restricted for ecological and security reasons. Tourism infrastructure is modest compared to mainstream beach destinations. That is part of the appeal, but it also means you need to plan differently.

Every visitor needs an entry permit issued by the Lakshadweep Administration. Indian nationals and foreign tourists both require one. The permit lists specific islands and travel dates. You cannot arrive on a permit for Kavaratti and stay on Kadmat without updating your permit. Accommodation on open islands is limited — guesthouses, government tourism properties and a few private resorts — and rooms are often booked weeks ahead in peak season.

How to Get to Lakshadweep

All mainland departures for Lakshadweep start from Kochi in Kerala. There is no direct connection from other Indian cities to the islands without transiting through Kochi (or occasionally other Kerala ports for certain ship sailings — confirm current ship departure points when booking). Your choice of transport shapes your entire itinerary.

Ship from Kochi

The passenger ship is the most established and economical way to reach Lakshadweep for many travellers. Ships sail overnight from Kochi to various islands — commonly Agatti, Kavaratti, Kalpeni and others depending on the sailing schedule. The journey typically takes 14 to 18 hours. You board in the evening and arrive at the island the following morning, or the reverse on return.

Ship tickets are sold in different classes — from basic seating to shared dormitories and private cabins. Cabins book out early in peak season. The ship experience is part of the journey: you see open sea, sometimes dolphins, and you arrive with a sense of having travelled a real distance. Downsides include seasickness in rough weather, limited privacy in lower classes, and the time cost of an overnight each way.

Ship schedules change seasonally. Monsoon months see reduced sailings. Do not assume a ship runs every day to your chosen island — verify the schedule for your dates before fixing accommodation and permits.

Flight to Agatti

Agatti has the only commercial airport in Lakshadweep. Regular flights operate between Kochi and Agatti through established airlines. Flight time is roughly 90 minutes. This is the fastest conventional air option and the most predictable for scheduling — airline timetables are published in advance and booking works through standard channels.

Agatti is one island. If your permit and accommodation are for Kavaratti, Kalpeni or Kadmat, you still need an inter-island transfer — usually by government ferry or chartered boat, which takes additional hours and depends on local schedules. Many first-time visitors fly to Agatti without realising their resort is on another island. Check where you are actually staying before booking flights.

Scheduled Seaplane Services

Seaplane connectivity between Kochi and Lakshadweep — and between islands — now runs on a published timetable from 18 September to 14 October 2026, daily except Tuesdays. One daily circuit links Kochi with Kalpeni (the mainland landing island), Kavaratti (the hub), Kadmat and Agatti. Seaplanes land on water, typically in a lagoon near the island. Kiltan is not on the current timetable, and timings after 14 October 2026 are not yet published.

Important: a published timetable does not remove weather risk. Sectors can be delayed or cancelled on the day, so reconfirm 24–48 hours before travel and keep a buffer day before non-refundable mainland connections. Booking is enquiry-based (seats are limited), not instant online purchase, and seaplanes carry strict baggage limits. Choosing Which Islands to Visit

Not every island in the archipelago accepts tourists. The commonly visited open islands include Agatti, Kavaratti, Kalpeni, Kadmat, Bangaram (seasonal access) and Minicoy (separate permit considerations). Each has a different character, infrastructure level and activity focus.

Agatti

Agatti is the gateway island with the airport. It has lagoon beaches, snorkelling and the most straightforward mainland access by flight. Good for first-time visitors who want minimal transfer complexity after landing. See our island guides for detailed profiles.

Kavaratti

Kavaratti is the administrative capital and the most developed island for tourism infrastructure. It has the Lakshadweep Aquarium, water sports facilities, and serves as a hub for inter-island connections. Many multi-island itineraries pass through Kavaratti.

Kalpeni

Kalpeni is known for its lagoon, Tip Beach sandbank and reef snorkelling. It is the mainland landing island for the scheduled seaplane from Kochi. A quieter island feel compared to Kavaratti, with strong appeal for couples and snorkellers.

Kadmat

Kadmat attracts divers and visitors who want a longer sandbank and quieter stays. Infrastructure is simpler than Kavaratti. Transfer times from Agatti or Kavaratti should be factored into your plan.

Bangaram and Minicoy

Bangaram offers a resort-style experience on a smaller island, with seasonal access depending on operations. Minicoy is culturally distinct — the southernmost island with its own language and traditions — and may involve separate permit and transfer arrangements. Confirm current access before including either in your itinerary.

How to Decide

Match islands to your priorities. First visit with limited time: one island, probably Agatti or Kavaratti. Snorkelling and lagoon focus: Kalpeni or Kadmat. Multi-island trip: plan Kavaratti as a hub and add Kalpeni or Kadmat. Always align island choices with your permit — you cannot visit islands not listed on it.

Lakshadweep Entry Permit

The permit is non-negotiable. Without it, you will not board the ship, you will not clear island entry, and airlines may deny boarding for Lakshadweep flights if permit verification is required. Apply early — allow 7 to 15 working days, longer in peak season.

Your permit must include every island you plan to visit and match your travel dates. You need confirmed accommodation details for the application. Accommodation on the Islands

Accommodation options vary by island. Government tourism properties — often referred to as tourism huts or guesthouses — are a common choice and typically include meals. Some islands have private resorts or homestay-style arrangements through authorised operators. Availability is limited, especially December through March.

Book accommodation before applying for your permit, or in parallel — the permit application asks for stay details. Do not apply for a permit listing an island where you have no confirmed room. If your preferred property is full, consider alternative islands rather than risking a permit for unavailable stays.

Meals are usually included or available at fixed timings at government properties. Outside those, restaurant options are limited. Inform hosts of dietary requirements in advance. Alcohol is not permitted in Lakshadweep — do not attempt to bring it.

Best Time to Visit Lakshadweep

The main tourism season runs from October to May. Seas are generally calmer, skies clearer and ship sailings more frequent. December to March is peak demand — book permits, accommodation and ship or flight tickets early.

October and November, and April and May, offer good conditions with slightly less crowding. April and May can be warm, but water visibility for snorkelling is often excellent.

Monsoon season, roughly June to September, brings heavy rain and rough seas. Ship services reduce and seaplane sectors are more likely to be disrupted. The current published seaplane timetable ends on 14 October 2026. Some properties close or operate with limited capacity in monsoon. Monsoon travel is possible for flexible travellers who accept disruption risk — not recommended for first-time visitors on fixed schedules.

How Many Days to Spend

A minimum of four to five days on the islands works for a single-island trip once you account for travel time from Kochi. A typical breakdown: Day 1 travel to Lakshadweep, Days 2–4 on island, Day 5 return. That is tight but workable for a long weekend if flights align.

Multi-island itineraries need six to eight days minimum. Each inter-island transfer — by boat or seaplane — consumes part of a day, and the seaplane circuit fixes when you can move between islands. Weather buffers add another day or two. Rushing three islands into four days leads to fatigue and missed connections.

Build at least one buffer day if using seaplane sectors or depending on boat transfers. Weather delays are normal, not exceptional.

What to Pack for Lakshadweep

Pack light. Soft bags are easier than hard suitcases on ships, small aircraft and boats. Essentials include:

• Light cotton clothing — modest dress is expected on inhabited islands; swimwear is fine at beaches but cover up when walking through villages
• Reef-safe sunscreen — standard sunscreens harm coral; use zinc-based or reef-safe labelled products
• Hat, sunglasses and sandals or reef shoes for rocky entry points
• Snorkelling gear if you prefer your own — some properties provide equipment
• Basic medications, personal prescriptions, insect repellent
• Torch — useful on islands with limited street lighting
• Printed permit, ID and booking confirmations — do not rely only on phone copies
• Cash in Indian rupees — see money section below

Leave alcohol, drones (restricted — check current rules before packing) and unnecessary electronics at home. Power cuts happen; bring a power bank if you rely on your phone.

Customs, Restrictions and Local Conduct

Lakshadweep is a Muslim-majority territory with conservative social norms. Dress modestly in villages and public areas — shoulders and knees covered. At beaches and water activities, normal swimwear is acceptable in tourist areas, but respect local sensibilities.

Alcohol is prohibited throughout the territory. Do not attempt to bring alcohol through Kochi or on ships — baggage may be checked. Pork products and non-halal items are sensitive — stick to meals provided by your accommodation or authorised eateries.

Photography of military installations, airports and local people without permission should be avoided. The islands are not a party destination. Loud music, public intoxication and disrespectful behaviour will cause problems.

Plastic restrictions apply on several islands. Carry a reusable water bottle where safe drinking water is available. Do not collect coral, shells or marine life — it is illegal and damages the reef ecosystem you came to see.

Budget Planning

Lakshadweep is not a budget backpacker destination, but costs vary widely by transport and accommodation choices. Without quoting specific prices — which change seasonally — here is how costs typically break down:

• Ship passage is the most economical mainland transport option, with class-based pricing
• Flights to Agatti cost more than ship but less than seaplane sectors for equivalent routes

• Inter-island transfers by boat add cost and time — factor them in for multi-island plans
• Permit fees apply; travel companies may charge a service fee for handling applications

Hidden costs catch first-time visitors: unexpected overnight in Kochi before ship sailing, excess baggage on flights, boat transfers not included in accommodation packages, and mainland hotel stays on arrival and departure days. Build a contingency of 10 to 15 percent above your estimated budget.

Money, ATMs and Mobile Connectivity

Cash is essential on most islands. ATMs exist on some islands — Kavaratti and Agatti — but they run out of cash, fail during power cuts or may not accept all cards. Carry sufficient rupees from Kochi before departure. Small denominations help for local purchases.

Card payment is limited to some government properties and larger establishments. UPI may work in some places but is not reliable everywhere. Treat the islands as cash-first.

Mobile connectivity has improved but remains patchy compared to the mainland. Major networks work on some islands with 4G in pockets; coverage drops on boat transfers and outer islands. Inform family that you may be unreachable for stretches. Download offline maps and keep important documents printed.

Food and Water

Food on Lakshadweep is heavily seafood-based — fresh fish, coconut-based curries, rice and local bread. Vegetarian options exist at government properties if requested in advance, but choices are simpler than mainland cities. If you have strict dietary needs, communicate them when booking accommodation.

Drink bottled or filtered water provided by your accommodation. Do not assume tap water is safe on every island. Carry a reusable bottle and refill where your host confirms water is treated.

First-Time Visitor Tips

• Apply for your permit as soon as dates and accommodation are confirmed — do not leave it to the last week
• Confirm which island your accommodation is actually on before booking Kochi–Agatti flights
• Book ship cabins or flights early for December to February travel

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Permit and itinerary mismatch. Listing islands you do not visit, or visiting islands not on your permit, causes entry problems. Update your permit if plans change.

Assuming daily ship or flight availability. Schedules are seasonal. Verify before booking non-refundable accommodation on the mainland.

Underestimating transfer time between islands. Agatti to Kavaratti by boat is not a quick hop. The scheduled seaplane sector is much faster — but it runs at a fixed time once per operating day, so check the timetable and confirm your seat.

Packing hard suitcases for seaplane or small boat transfers. Soft duffels are practical. Weight limits on seaplanes are strict.

Expecting resort-level nightlife or dining variety. Lakshadweep is about the sea, reef and quiet island time. Adjust expectations accordingly.

Ignoring weather buffers. One extra day can save an entire trip when a boat or seaplane sector is delayed.

Common patterns include flying to Agatti and returning by ship, taking the ship in and a scheduled seaplane sector between islands, or flying in and using inter-island boats.
