Two Different Air Options

Both involve aircraft, but they serve different routes and travel needs. The Kochi–Agatti flight lands at Lakshadweep's only commercial airport on Agatti island. Seaplane sectors land on water — at Kalpeni lagoon for mainland entry, and at lagoon or coastal points near other islands for inter-island travel.

Agatti is one island. If your permit and accommodation are for Kavaratti, Kalpeni or Kadmat, a flight to Agatti is only the first leg — you still need a transfer. A scheduled seaplane to Kalpeni, then Kavaratti, can eliminate that transfer entirely.

How Agatti Flights Work

Regular flights operate between Kochi (Cochin International Airport) and Agatti Airport through established airlines. Flight duration is approximately 90 minutes. Booking works through airline websites, travel agents and standard booking platforms — similar to any domestic Indian route.

Schedules are published in advance. You can book weeks or months ahead and plan around fixed departure times. Check-in, boarding and baggage handling follow standard airline procedures.

What Happens After You Land at Agatti

Agatti has tourism infrastructure — guesthouses, lagoon beaches, snorkelling. If Agatti is your destination, the flight completes your mainland-to-island journey. If your stay is elsewhere, you need an inter-island transfer:

  • Government ferry or chartered boat to Kavaratti — several hours including jetty waiting time
  • Boat to Kalpeni, Kadmat or other islands — schedules vary, may not run daily
  • Scheduled seaplane sector from Agatti to Kavaratti — one rotation per operating day, no Tuesday service

How Scheduled Seaplane Entry Works

The direct scheduled mainland sector is Kochi to Kalpeni — a water landing at Kalpeni lagoon rather than Agatti airport, departing Kochi at 07:30 (10:00 on 18 September). If your itinerary centres on Kalpeni, Kavaratti or Kadmat, seaplane entry delivers you directly without the Agatti detour and boat transfer.

Inter-Island Seaplane From Agatti

Even if you fly to Agatti, the scheduled inter-island seaplane sectors from the Kavaratti hub provide faster transfers to Kadmat or back to Kalpeni than boats. Agatti to Kavaratti by seaplane replaces a long boat day. (Kiltan is not on the current timetable.) Review all sectors on our routes page.

Kochi to Agatti by conventional flight: approximately 90 minutes air time plus airport check-in, security and baggage collection — plan half a day door to door from Kochi hotel to Agatti guesthouse.

Kochi to Kalpeni by scheduled seaplane: significantly shorter than the overnight ship, with water landing at Kalpeni lagoon. Exact duration depends on aircraft and conditions — confirm when availability is checked.

Agatti to Kavaratti by boat: often half a day or more. Agatti to Kavaratti by scheduled seaplane: about 20 minutes in the air, one rotation per operating day.

Total journey time depends on your destination island, not just mainland transport. Flight to Agatti plus boat to Kavaratti may take longer overall than a direct scheduled seaplane to Kavaratti via Kalpeni hub routing.

Baggage Comparison

Conventional Flight Baggage

Airline baggage allowances apply — typically 15 to 20 kg checked baggage on domestic routes plus cabin bag, depending on fare class and carrier. Standard suitcases are fine. Excess baggage can usually be purchased.

Divers, families and long-stay visitors benefit from airline baggage capacity. Equipment like snorkelling gear, multiple bags and gifts fit within normal airline limits.

Seaplane Baggage

Seaplane baggage limits are much lower — plan for approximately 12 kg checked baggage per person based on available service information. Soft duffel bags only; hard suitcases may not be accepted. Weight is strictly enforced on small aircraft.

If you cannot reduce packing to seaplane limits, fly to Agatti and use boat transfers — or fly to Agatti and take only a day bag on the inter-island seaplane sectors. Confirm allowances at booking.

Airline schedules are published months ahead. You book, receive a ticket with fixed departure time, and plan around it. Permit verification may be required at check-in — carry printed permit and ID.

The seaplane runs on a published timetable for 18 September to 14 October 2026 (daily except Tuesdays), so departure times are set — but seats are limited and confirmed by enquiry, and a sector can still be delayed or cancelled by weather on the day. Reporting times are communicated with booking confirmation. Timings after 14 October 2026 are not yet published.

Do not plan tight connections — such as Agatti flight landing at 10 AM and scheduled seaplane departure at 11 AM — without confirmed timing and buffer. Same-day flight-to-seaplane connections require careful coordination.

Reaching Other Islands

This is the decisive factor for many itineraries.

From Agatti Flight

Agatti connects to other islands by boat or scheduled seaplane. Boat schedules are not always daily. Weather affects boats too, though differently from seaplanes. A Kavaratti stay after Agatti flight typically loses half a day to transfer.

From Scheduled Seaplane Entry

Mainland seaplane entry at Kalpeni puts you on a lagoon island directly. Scheduled inter-island sectors from Kalpeni to Kavaratti, Kavaratti to Kadmat and Kavaratti to Agatti enable multi-island trips without a conventional flight at all.

If your itinerary is Agatti-only, conventional flight is the logical choice. If your itinerary spans Kalpeni, Kavaratti and Kadmat, scheduled seaplane routing may save multiple transfer days.

Cost Factors

We do not quote specific fares — airline and seaplane pricing change by season, demand and route. Qualitative comparison:

  • Agatti flights have published fares on booking platforms — the most transparent air pricing to Lakshadweep
  • Seaplane fares are confirmed at enquiry per sector and date — typically premium relative to airline per-passenger cost for the air portion, but may save boat transfer fees and time
  • Hidden costs — Agatti flight plus boat transfer plus possible overnight in Agatti if boat missed; seaplane direct entry avoids some transfer costs but fare may exceed flight-plus-boat total

Weather and Reliability

Conventional flights to Agatti operate in a wider weather window than seaplanes. Agatti has a proper runway; approaches follow standard instrument procedures. Delays occur in monsoon but commercial flights operate on many days when seaplanes would not.

Seaplanes require calm lagoon surfaces, visibility and wind within limits. Higher cancellation and delay rates — build buffer days for seaplane-dependent itineraries.

Boats from Agatti to other islands are also weather-affected. A flight-to-Agatti plan can still fail at the transfer stage during rough seas.

Comfort and Experience

Airline flights offer standard cabin experience — pressurised cabin, cabin service on some carriers, familiar boarding process. Agatti airport is small but functional.

Seaplane flights are short sectors on light aircraft — noise, tighter seating, scenic low-altitude views, water landing experience. Neither is inherently more comfortable; they are different.

Some travellers specifically want the seaplane water landing experience. Others prefer the simplicity of a normal flight. Preference is valid either way.

Seaplane In, Flight Out

Enter via the scheduled Kochi–Kalpeni seaplane for direct lagoon arrival. Exit via Agatti airport flight if your last island is Agatti or you transfer to Agatti by seaplane or boat for the return flight. Mixes premium entry with established airline return.

Flight In, Ship Out

Couple, Five Days, Kavaratti Stay

Flight to Agatti: Day 1 fly, transfer to Kavaratti by boat — may lose half Day 1. Days 2–4 Kavaratti. Day 5 return boat to Agatti, fly to Kochi. Works reliably; transfer day is the cost.

Scheduled seaplane: Day 1 Kochi 07:30 to Kalpeni, connect to Kavaratti — same-day arrival at the hub by about 09:45. Days 2–4 on island. Day 5 return seaplane or flight from Agatti. More island time; keep a weather buffer and avoid Tuesdays.

Family, Seven Days, Three Islands

Flight-based: Fly to Agatti, boat to Kavaratti, boat to Kadmat, boat back — three transfer days in seven. Heavy luggage manageable on flights and boats.

Seaplane-based: Kochi to Kalpeni, Kalpeni to Kavaratti, Kavaratti to Kadmat — all scheduled sectors on the daily circuit. One transfer day instead of three. Baggage limits challenging for family — may need flight to Agatti with selective seaplane inter-island sectors only.
